THEY HAVE DONE THEIR WORK behind the scenes with little fanfare.

Now, 12 women who have given yeoman service in communities across Barbados have had their work heralded during an awards ceremony at the University of the West Indies (UWI) on Saturday night.

The event was part of celebrations for International Women’s Day, which will be officially observed tomorrow.

One of the honorees was long-standing educator and humanitarian Sybil Leacock.

The 87-year-old, who still runs Leacock’s Private School Inc. in St Peter, has given more than a half-century to the education system. She was also credited for volunteering her time and resources to assist adults and children in the area, among other community work. (WILLCOMM)
