Top seeds Pilgrim, Thorpe bow out

TOP SEEDS are finding the going tough in the senior badminton championships.

Both the No. 1 seed Bradley Pilgrim and No. 3 seed Dakeil Thorpe suffered defeats in the opening session of the championships at the Wildey Gymnasium on Friday night.

Pilgrim went down in the second round of the men’s single draw, losing 21-17, 6-21, 13-21 to Damien Howell, and Thorpe was beaten 21-16, 21-16 by Sabeel Foster.

Howell, however, found the going tough in Saturday’s quarter-finals where he lost 18-21, 21-11, 21-13 in a hard-fought three-setter against Cory Fanus.

No. 2 seed Shae Martin advanced to the semi-finals after defeating Jehu Gaskin 21-17, 21-5 in the quarter-finals.

Martin had earlier brushed aside Nicholas Howard 21-3, 21-9 and was carded to play Foster in the semi-finals. (HG)
