Public service not lazy, says Byer-Suckoo

MINISTER OF LABOUR Senator Dr Esther Byer-Suckoo has hit back at critics who have branded the public sector as “lazy” and “unproductive”, saying it was one of the best in the region.

Her comments came over the weekend when the spotlight was placed on several public sector workers as they were feted at an awards ceremony held at Hilton Barbados. The sixth GIVE (Great, Initiative, Value, Excellence) Awards were held to celebrate workers who by their high standard of productivity, among other attributes demonstrated, bring credit to themselves and the sector.

“For too long, people have defaulted to the misperception that public officers are not agents of excellence. The public service is often unfairly labelled as lazy and unproductive, and these admonishments are in most cases baseless as, when the facts are examined, the problem is often not with the service provider but with the customer’s failure to meet the requirements.

“While our public service is not perfect, in the six iterations of the GIVE Awards we have been able to recognise excellence in many of our public service colleagues. These awardees have delivered exemplary service to and on behalf of their country for decades. Indeed, Barbados has one of the best public services in the region and in the hemisphere,” she said.
