DEAR CHRISTINE: Advice for dealing with bullying

Dear Christine,

I was reading another advice column recently and was inspired to share a story about bullying with you and readers. It had to do with a ten-year-old girl who was being bullied at school.

She went home one day and told her parents about the stress and strains of school life because of the bullying she was experiencing. When asked if she wanted her mother to talk to the principal, the girl said she wanted to handle the situation on her own.

Her mum suggested to her that she write down the times and dates when the bullying occurred as well as what was actually being done. In essence the boy who was bullying her had no idea that each time he did or said anything to the girl that it was being recorded in a book.

The child’s mum then told her when she felt she had enough evidence against the boy, she should take the diary to the principal. She did. As a result, the boy’s parents were called to the school and the case brought to their attention.

The abuse stopped that very day.

It was recorded that trying to handle the problem herself gave the woman’s daughter “a sense of power, confidence and control over her own life”. All the while, the mother was monitoring the situation from afar.

That little girl grew up to be “an outgoing, happy, kind and confident young woman”.

Like her mother, I am hoping that this story will help all those children who find themselves the victims of bullies.

I commend both the child and her mother for exercising wisdom and dealing with the issue of bullying with a level head and common sense.

Dear A Reader,

Thank you so much for taking time to share this “third party” experience. It is an excellent eye-opener and good advice for parents whose children are bullied, those children who become victims, principals and the very bullies who can see for themselves how easy it is to expose them.

Thanks again. I appreciate the time you took to pen your letter.

– CHRISTINE
