Youth ‘missing’ from fishing industry

THE WOMAN who conceptualised the Oistins Fish Festival has bemoaned the fact that young people are not entering the fishing industry.

Stella Lady St John wants the elders who have their own boats to take young people under their wings and introduce them to the industry.

“I was so surprised to learn that they do not go out on the sea anymore, that they do not go out fishing. Nothing. And we have got sea all around us. Surely we have to do something about our fishing industry. We have to train young people,” she declared.

Lady St John, who came up with the idea that became the Oistins Fish Festival 39 years ago, was speaking at yesterday’s opening ceremony of the festival in the boatyard near the Berinda Cox Fish Market.
