GEORGETOWN – A man was killed and another admitted to hospital when they, and others, were attacked by a swarm of African killer bees on Saturday in Bath Settlement, to the west of here.

The police report that Ramesh “Satesh” Lalaram, 53, who worked at the state-owned Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) was walking with nine other colleagues when they were attacked by the swarm of killer bees.

According to one of injured men, they saw a herd of cows running in their direction with the swarm of bees overhead.

Some of the men reportedly ran to a canal, while Lalaram and another man, Alta Ally remained on the ground.

Ally reportedly warded off the bees by using a cigarette lighter to burn dried vegetation but Lalaram remained covered with the bees.

While Lalaram’s colleagues eventually got rid of the bees covering him – he remained motionless.

An ambulance rushed all of the men to hospital where eight were treated and released.

However, Lalaram was pronounced dead on arrival by doctors and Ally was admitted in serious condition.

GuySuCo has since launched an investigation into the incident. (CMC)
