JONATHAN JONES withstood some early jostling to win the Under-18 Boys’ 800 metres in record time yesterday on the final evening of the 2016 Flow CARIFTA Games at the Grenada National Stadium in St George’s.

Barbados finished third overall in the standings with 20 medals. The Bajans won six gold, six silver and eight bronze medals. Jamaica dominated once again, with 86 medals – 42 gold, 28 silver, 16 bronze.

Jones, with his head cocked customarily to one side, confidently pushed his way to the finish line in an impressive one minute, 49.88 seconds. His performance erased the previous Under-18 record of 1:51.79 seconds set by compatriot Jerrad Mason in 2011.

The Coleridge and Parry athlete was pushed out of his lane by Samuel Lynch of Guyana and it momentarily put him off his stride. He was in sixth position by the 200-metre mark but with his long looping stride, he soon surged to the front and never looked back. (PG)
