PM calls for tourism diversity

BARBADOS IS UPGRADING and expanding its tourism offerings to maintain its position as a popular tourism destination.

The assurance has come from Prime Minister Freundel Stuart who praised Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy for restructuring the former Barbados Tourism Authority in an effort to achieve this goal. Stuart said: “If we do not diversify the product offerings, there is a fatigue factor that could overtake them and that could make Barbados less attractive.”

Addressing guests attending the last in the series of winter season receptions for repeat visitors at his official residence Ilaro Court on Wednesday night, the Prime Minister commended “the very creative” Minister of Tourism for his vision and for recognising that the marketing function of the tourism industry was “something separate and distinct from the product dimension of the industry”.

Stuart said the creation of two separate entities – the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc and the Barbados Tourism Product Authority – last year, meant that special attention could now be given to the creation of new products and the diversification of product offerings to make the island more attractive.
