OWEN ARTHUR’S response to the swirling controversy in West Indies cricket was on point – spoken like the great prime minister he used to be.
The prime ministers of the region need to stop fuelling the fire that threatens to consume our cricket. They are not setting a good example.
I find it ridiculous that so many persons are jumping on the bandwagon that is calling for the dissolution of the West Indies Cricket Board when it is so obvious that the problem is the president. Unfortunately, the president has become synonymous with the board.
Conde Riley spoke volumes about what the board has done for the three victorious West Indies teams, and defended the board well with facts. He even read from letters which showed that the board had, in fact, taken care of the uniforms, contrary to what Sammy said.
In response to the criticism that the board did not do enough in terms of development and preparation of the team, Mr Riley reminded that the players were always away playing T20 for other franchises. He added that if the board tried to force these players to be available for developmental programmes, it would be lambasted for trying to stop them from earning a living.
The board cannot be all bad when the Under-19 team, the women’s team and the men’s team have won their respective championships – a feat never achieved by any other cricket board in the world.
Let me take this opportunity to congratulate the West Indies Cricket Board on the success of the three teams, and thank the board members and the entire staff for their hard work and dedication.
