HIT WITH THREATS of legal action, the Barbados Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BCCI) has abandoned any push for another duty-free shopping day.
This was disclosed by BCCI president Eddy Abed who said while the Bridgetown duty-free day staged in 2011 was a big hit with shoppers some retailers who did not offer duty-free shopping and others located in commercial districts outside of The City threatened legal action.
Speaking to the media on Friday at the launch of Standard Distributors’ new showroom at Norman Centre on Broad Street, Abed said: “It was a successful day for all those in Bridgetown.
“Yes, those who offered duty-free sales had a better day than those who didn’t. However, when the tide rises, all the boats rise from the little moses to the big Queen Mary cruise ship.”
