Cash fear

SOME TRADE UNION LEADERS are apparently fearful that their umbrella body, the Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados (CTUSAB), could collapse under massive financial strain.

In fact, one labour source told the DAILY NATION the situation was so bad that the Congress recently “sought to borrow a few thousand dollars” from the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) to keep its offices operational.

According to the source, the dire situation was a direct result of the failure of the Government to keep its annual commitment of an $80 000 subvention to CTUSAB, adding: “All across the Caribbean the Congress has been seen as a model organisation that has contributed in no small measure to the stability of the island for two decades, and it is really not in our interest as a nation at this critical time to allow it to collapse.”
