MINISTER OF EDUCATION Ronald Jones says though work has been done at Combermere School to seal sewers and block out areas that could become nesting places for birds, the Acacia trees which were identified as contributing to the environmental problems there are yet to be removed.
Jones said the school was still in consultation with the owners of the land about the removal of the trees.
However, he has asked people living in the immediate vicinity of schools to refrain from cutting grass, shrubs and other vegetation during school hours because of the risk of the smell impacting on the schools.
As he spoke of other schools which were impacted by environmental concerns, Jones said the Lodge School underwent an intensive cleaning operation to remove mould. He said work was ongoing to fix the problem since technical personnel had suggested what could be used as an antifungal treatment.
With regard to Lawrence T. Gay Primary School, Jones said he had only received a preliminary report late last week and work would commence this week to remove some structures and remediate some areas that were affected. (LK)
