CROP THIEVES ought to rake in stiffer penalties.
That view was expressed by several agricultural stakeholders who said they supported the prison sentences given to food crop thieves recently.
Last week, several persons were hauled before the law courts for sweet potato theft, including Ian Emmerson Bennett and Hayden Ricardo Brathwaite, who were sentenced to 18 months and two years respectively.
The SUNDAY SUN visited some plantations on Thursday to speak with farmers about the apparent unearthing of the illegal produce market.
It was around 11:15 a.m. when the team arrived at Brighton plantation in St George. While touring the farm with owner, Michael Pile, he noted his partial satisfaction with the conviction of thieves.
