HEALING HERBS: Kiwi good for diabetics

I RECOGNISE that Barbadians and other Caribbean people have developed a love for silent doctor kiwi fruit. I continue to urge readers to consume more Caribbean grown fruit but I still have to cater to diversity.

In retrospect, I continue to hold precious sweet memories of kiwi and my honeymoon. My lips are sealed. However, as I began to pen this article, the song Precious And Few by Climax invades my mind and the line “Quiet and blue like the sky, I’m hung over you” bought kiwi sharply into focus.

It is definitely an alluring, sensual fruit. Research indicates that kiwi was discovered in the Chang Kiang Valley in China. Its nutrition content includes vitamins C, E and K. Kiwi also contains folate, potassium, manganese, fibre and copper.

Kiwi is an excellent fruit for diabetics to consume. Research on the website care2.com indicatesthat “kiwi is in the ‘low’ category for glycemic index, meaning it does not raise your blood sugar quickly. It has a glycemic load of four which means it is safe for diabetics”. Its low glycemic content also makes kiwi suitable for those who are on the weight loss path. Studies also show that kiwi is excellent in preventing respiratory track challenges.

A study published in Thoraxthat followed over 18 000 children aged 6-7 years living in Centraland Northern Italy found that those eating the most citrus and kiwi fruit had 44 per cent less incidence of wheezing. Also, shortness of breath was reduced by 32 per cent, severe wheeze by 41 per cent, night-time cough by 27 per cent, chroniccough by 25 per cent, and runny nose by 28 per cent.

Kiwi also contains five times the vitamin C as an orange. It can also protect against DNA damage.

I hope that you can continue to spice up your life both spiritually and physically by including prayer, silent doctors, love and exercise into your life. Go out there and ensure you educate and empower yourself about the Caribbean array of silent doctors. Free your mind.
