DEAR CHRISTINE: Son, 19, wants to marry older woman

Dear Christine,

Our son is 19 and says he is in love with a woman who is four years older than him. He is even talking about getting married.

We keep telling him this person is not right for him, and in any case it is too early for him to be thinking of marriage.

Although he may not have been an A-grade student, he is excellent and a skilled young man.

Do you think we are wrong to think this way?

– R.C.

Dear R.C.,

I hope you’re not making the age difference between your son and his girlfriend a real issue, although I will admit you’re having some concern about him getting married at 19.

Much of it depends on how mature he is to take on the responsibility of marriage and, of course, the possibility of becoming a father.

Try reasoning with him that while you are not totally against him marrying his girlfriend, you would prefer if he put this off for at least another few years.

I hope he will agree to the wisdom of your appeal. If not, you’ll just have to hope for the best.
