Ministry not happy about meetings

THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION has slammed meetings called by the two teachers’ unions this afternoon that would have left more than 26 000 primary and other schoolchildren without supervision.

A mere half-hour separates the meeting called by the Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) for the Gymnasium of the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex and the one hosted by the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union (BSTU) at 1:30 at Solidarity House. The altercation between a student and teacher at Ellerslie Secondary School will be high on the agenda at both meetings.

In a statement issued through the Government Information Service yesterday evening, the ministry acknowledged receipt of correspondence from both unions about the meetings, but it did not sit well with the administrators.

“The Ministry of Education considers this to be a clear case of industrial action, and remains unclear as to the reason for this action. The Ministry intends always to act in the best interest of the students and teachers and any action and activity which compromises this must be condemned,” the statement said.
