DEAD WRONG. That’s how lawyer and social activist David Comissiong has summed up the position of the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union (BSTU) and Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) in calling for the expulsion of an Ellerslie Secondary School student who was allegedly involved in a violent confrontation with one of her teachers.
Describing himself as a “friend and supporter” of trade unions, Comissiong said: “But when you’re wrong, you are wrong! And there can be no doubt that the leaders of both the BSTU and the BUT are completely wrong in publicly demanding the expulsion of the 14-year-old . . . student.”
He accused the unions of making statements “subversive to the laws of Barbados”, hindering the child’s right to “a fair and just disciplinary process” and opening up the school’s board and Minister of Education Ronald Jones to legal action as a result of a perceived tainted process.
