BARBADOS’ CAPACITY for handling cargo and pleasure vessels has been given a significant boost.

That is as a result of the recently expanded Berth #5, which was commissioned at a ceremony at the Bridgetown Port today.

It is equipped with a new state-of-the-art crane which will take some of the load off the much smaller one from the late 1980s.

The new crane and the other equipment at Berth 5 form part of the port’s Master Plan, which was rolled out in 2011. Work on the newest berth started in April last year and was completed in October. The total cost of the project is BDS$115 million. (YB)
