Sir Grantley Herbert Adams (1898 – 1987)

TO RESCUE BARBADIANS from the strong grip of social and economic ill-treatment was the aim of Sir Grantley Adams, who would go on to become the first Premier of Barbados.

Adams was the founder of the Barbados Labour Party and the lawyer who represented Clement Payne in his case against deportation to Trinidad.

He was either the one figure, or an important one, behind the following changes in Barbados: the right of women to vote on the same terms as men, establishment of a Labour Department, amendments to the Barbados Education Act, the setting up of Erdiston Teachers College, improved working conditions for shop assistants and increased old age pensions amongst other things.

The following was produced by the Barbados Government Information Service.
