Firefighters feel the heat

FIREFIGHTERS SPENT A huge part of this year beating back hundreds of fierce grass fires across the country.

Fire officer Andrew Taylor said that so far for the year the Barbados Fire Service has been kept busy battling 486 grass fires. At this time last year the service had responded to 288 fires and ended the year with 856.

Taylor blamed human activity for the conflagrations, explaining that the island – though in a drought – was not that hot for spontaneous combustion to give rise to the fires.

He explained that by the time the tender reach the areas the fires, fuelled by the dry conditions, have consumed such a large area it was hard to determine how they started.
