Cane knot

A CAUTION is being sent to people who buy peeled sugar cane from wayside vendors.

It is coming from chairman of the Barbados Sugar Industry Limited (BSIL) Patrick Bethel, who was responding to a query from the DAILY NATION about the impact cane theft was having on the tonnage of cane reaped.

Bethel acknowledged that the amount of cane stolen was of concern “in several ways”, but he also pointed to the health risk posed to people who bought cane in plastic bags on the streets.

“I often wonder where are our health inspectors. People go into the ground, peel the cane . . . ,” Bethel said.
