OUTSIDE THE PULPIT: Breaking bad habits on the job

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven. I have seen the business that God has given to the sons of men to be busy with. – Ecclesiastes Chapter 3 verse 1 and 10.

IT CAN BE VERY difficult these days to have a good conversation with anyone at home or the workplace. That is so because so many people are caught up with modern-day technology whether at home, school and work and even church.

Some people do not know when and where to use it and that there is a place for everything on earth. There are people in the same house who text and email each other rather than have an oral conversation.

Even in the office, a person will be sitting next to a colleague and yet they are texting or emailing each other. What a pity.

I have gone to a number of offices, including Government departments, and have seen staff – both junior and senior – sitting at their desks with earphones, or whatever there are called, in their ears and I am assuming they are listening to music or whatever it may be.

This type of behaviour should not be allowed in the workplace because it is not good for business, whether it be Government or the private sector.

Too weak

Where are the heads of department, supervisors and the senior staff and what are they doing about this type of behaviour? Are they too weak to address this problem or are they afraid of the same workers?

All of us must come together and address the problem. Our secondary schools must play a great role with the school-leavers and point out to them what is expected of them in the workplace; that is if the students will listen.

When school-leavers get to the workplace, all bad habits must be left behind. We are always talking about productivity, how are we going to get it with so many bad habits out there?
