THERE WAS NO major protest action today but parents of St Matthews Primary School students are gearing up for intensified protests on Tuesday.
Sherita Parris, a member of the group of concerned parents said the parents, students and some teachers want their school back from principal Barbara Broome-Bailey. They accused her of not only belittling students by calling them names and also insulting parents.
A group of about a dozen parents gathered at the school’s road sign along Friendly Hall Main Road with placards. They gathered a short while after Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave arrived at the school for a visit. However, after given a directive by police, they then gathered by a nearby house where they vented their issues.
Sir Elliott, in speaking at the school function, spoke of the “disquiet” at the school, noting that the visit was almost cancelled as a result. He said that he was sure that in time an amicable solution would be found. He also said the education of children was too important to be compromised.
Parents are discontented with the principal who came to the school in January and believe their concerns are not being addressed. (LK)
