TECHNOLOGY HAS CHANGED the way we keep in touch with each other on a daily basis, whether we are countries apart or next to each other.
I remember when The Boatyard was the place to be and you would go in the party and find humans can’t done.
Everybody was in there dancing and having fun, men having impromptu dance competitions, women sweating way dem lives, hairstyles falling apart but no one cared ’cause they were having fun.
But now, when you go in a party yuh got to look twice to see if it is a party or a museum ’cause people standing still and on a phone, posing off and taking selfies talking ’bout #YOLO #PartyWasLit #TurnUp.
As soon as a woman sweat in a party now she gine to de bathroom to dab and, speaking of bathrooms, that is the true selfie hub.
Meanwhile, poor you can’t get in de bathroom ’cause dem in day posing in the mirrors. Some people’s SnapChat more exciting than their real lives.
But more noticeably, technology has allowed Bajans to advance their levels of maliciousness.
Look, one time I was at a netball game, and because I like to keep to myself, I took my phone so it would keep my company between the quarters.
So de quarter done and I decided to check my messages. While in a heavy group chat conversation, something tell me “look back”. As I turn de woman look away so I didn’t catch her fully in the act.
So I decided to start typing and the message went something like this: “I ain’t too sure what you looking for; it may be riches, secrets or salvation, but whatever it is it will not be found here. Stop looking in my phone?”
A giggle and a stupse
I heard a long stupse and a giggle; then she suddenly had to go to the bathroom.
Wunnuh remember when phones only had the camera at the back and to take a selfie yuh had was to turn the phone around and hope fun de best?
One time I was in a bus, in a heavy texting conversation, and I decided to take a picture of myself. I turned the phone around and pressed the button many times hoping that I captured at least one good one.
When I checked the results who could I see but the man who was sitting directly behind me, peeping in my phone and smiling for the camera. If you doubt me ask me.
I beg wunnuh: let de phones rest sometimes and actively take part in life, ’cause life nice!
