YUH GAWH BE KIDDIN’: Manners maketh man

UH AIN’T NUTTING sweeter than good customer service. I mean customer service where de person seems to be genuinely happy to assist you as though that was why they were placed on earth. But, sadly, that don’t happen suh often hey.

I made a call to a place, that will not be named, that does some of the best roti, in my opinion. And the way the employee answered the phone was so disturbing. I had to check the dialled number because I swear I call at she and interrupted her from watching an episode of Empire.

Then the lady proceeded to place me on hold long, suh long that I forgot why I was on the phone, and when she returned she offered no apology for the long wait.

If you think that’s bad; some fast food drive-thru attendants address you in such a casual way that you would swear you and dem pitch marbles. I love my Bajan dialect, but there is a time and place for it.

No standards

You don’t know who at the other end of the speaker but you gine come to de speaker and say “welcome tuh (insert place here) can I take ur order?” and when I turn and place my order, you respond oh so elegantly, “Nah we ain’t got none ah dah.”

Or shout to de back “Wait we got any more (insert food item here)!” And then come back and say “Nah we ain’t got nuh more ah dat.” If you are going to be working in customer service I think some form of standard English is necessary, but that could just be me.

Then duh got de store clerks that don’t even bother to look up when you walk into the store further more acknowledge your presence. If by chance you manage to get any response from them it usually sounds like a sleepy child that is speaking to you or like Droopy the cartoon dog that always lacked enthusiasm.

Worse yet is if you actually need help some of them stand there as though you are wasting their time by asking if they have the item in your size. You think that these people realise that we actually pay for the items and not beg?

Despite all of my negative experiences with customer service, I have to say that two places have gotten it right! SOL and Esso gas stations. If you doubt me ask me. The service I have received has been impeccable, the employees are mannerly, pleasant and extremely helpful going beyond their duties. I salute these two companies and their employees!
