PEOPLE WITH NO MONEY in their bank accounts have written more than a $150 000 in worthless cheques to the Carlton and Emerald City supermarkets over the past four years.
And with no seeming end to the situation, Andrew Bynoe, owner of the two popular retail entities, has taken the drastic step of ending the acceptance of personal cheques.
Bynoe told the WEEKEND NATION yesterday that from July 1, only people pre-approved by the retailer would be allowed to offer cheques as a form of payment for groceries from the outlets located at Black Rock, St Michael and Six Roads, St Philip.
“Our preferred method of payment will be cash, credit cards and debit cards . . . . The reason why we have to move away from personal cheques is because too many cheques are being returned these days and it is a high cost to the business,” the supermarket owner explained. (GE)
