AS THE FIRST WOMAN to head the Probation Department, Hildegarde Weekes inspired many a young officer working in the probation services. The legacy of her pioneering work in the department is the excellent relationship the department enjoys with various sections of the judiciary and the social services.

When the department honoured her posthumously last week, there were many guests sharing the experience of having sat at the feet of the stalwart.

After hearing historian Trevor Marshall detail the life and work of Weekes during her inaugural memorial lecture at the Frank Collymore Hall, guests reminisced over cocktails in the courtyard of the Tom Adams Financial Centre.

Former Chief Probation Officer June Gibson, deputy director of the Child Care Board Denise Nurse and the Reverend Sonia Hinds were among those in attendance.
