Arawak’s tree ‘fix’

TREES HAVE BEEN PLANTED and are expected to, in at least two years, offer Bromefield, St Lucy residents some comfort and protection from the dust emanating from a limestone quarry located upwind from their homes.

Residents gave mixed reviews yesterday to the effort of the Arawak Cement Company to plant 16 ficus trees as a means of trapping dust that comes from the quarry. While most said they were happy that Arawak had engaged them in dialogue and was willing to put things in place to mitigate the dust problems, they said they wanted a solution that was more immediate.

Vincent Murrell, who is still totally opposed to the location of the quarry so close to a residential area, questioned what would happen in the two to three years it took for the trees to mature.

“People can die in three years’ time,” he said. “They can get cancer in three years’ time. That is not good enough, especially for people who suffer from asthma and sinusitis.” (LK)
