DRAUGHTS in Barbados is in a good place.
That was the assertion from Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy during an address at the opening ceremony of the Barbados Draughts Association’s Go-As-You-Please tournament at the Hilton Barbados last Sunday evening.
“We have had our challenges but I believe that draughts is in a good place. There are 64 local sports’ organisations and it is a fact that you can count on your fingers on one hand in which we have produced a world champion. Among athletics, boxing and cricket, draughts is one of them and should be proud,” said Sealy.
“This is a sport which has been to the very top, not in regional, not only in the hemisphere. We have had world champions and it says a lot for an island with a population that is still short of 300 000. (JC)
