ART WITH AN environmental pledge flowed from the crayons of more than 150 primary school students in this year’s Scotiabank/Future Centre Trust I Pledge Eco Art competition.

The winners received their prizes at an awards ceremony held at the bank’s Broad Street branch recently.

Executive director of the Future Centre Trust, Cherice Gibson, told the top three prize winners in the 6-8 and 9-11 age categories, as well as the two artists who received special mention, that they were the reflection of the 153 entries the trust had received and every entry was worthy of recognition.

She said this year’s competition was the best yet.

“This is the fourth year, and without the support of Scotiabank, we could not continue to do what we are doing and it’s getting bigger and better,” Gibson added.

Manager of the Broad Street branch, Steven Smith, said the competition, which was launched on Earth Day, focused on water and energy conservation.

This was the fourth year the bank was partnering with the Future Centre Trust for the competition, the intention of which is to engage and educate young people about issues relating to the environment.

“Scotiabank and the Future Centre Trust share a common conviction that it’s important for this competition to remain focused on children,” Smith said.

“It is always easier to effect change through young people as they are the ones more receptive to these messages.

“At this stage in their lives it is not a matter of changing habits. It is more a question of forming good habits,” he said, adding that he was inspired by the pledges outlined with the art work.

The chief judge, deputy principal at Springer Memorial School Mitchell Maxwell, who worked with Reneaka Morris and Sherri Cumberbatch, said the judging panel was “extremely impressed” with all the entries. (HLE)
