Traffic fines ‘not enough’

FINES HAVE become part of public service vehicle (PSV) operators’ job descriptions, so more has to be done, said president of the Barbados Road Safety Association, Sharmaine Roland-Bowen.

In addition, she said the Transport Authority needed a revamp.

In a heartfelt interview, the road safety president said inadequate legal action plus an ineffective Transport Authority had to bear part of the blame for the continuing reckless behaviour exhibited on the roads by some PSV operators.

“Fines are inadequate; they are part of the job description by now [for PSV operators]. We need to do more – in addition to fines, send them for education and retraining. The punishments are not a deterrent, the owners of the vans need to be hit where it hurts and until we have the proper people in the proper positions, we will only keep talking and talking and nothing will be done,” she said.
