Illegal imports hurting chicken producers

IMPORTED CHICKEN wings are leaving some producers in a foul mood.

And loss of jobs could eventually be on the cards, especially if illegal importation continues.

That was the cry of some poultry producers who are reporting a loss in revenue as a result of the unlawful importation of chicken wings recently.

Several stakeholders told the SUNDAY SUN that the smuggled poultry meat added more weight to the decades-long controversial issue of chicken imports.

In the past four to five weeks, sales at Barbados’ largest poultry producer, Chickmont Foods Limited, have dipped, said managing director Edward Albecker.

“We have found that our sales have been decreased at some supermarkets by as much as 30 per cent in light of imports,” he said.
