Ministry probing food label issue

THE MINISTRY OF COMMERCE and Industry has sent out a team of inspectors to the premises of a food distribution company which is being investigated for the alleged manipulation of expiration dates on some of its products.

Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Philmore Best, told the SUNDAY SUN that upon completion of the investigation, a report would be submitted to the ministry, after which any possible sanction would be determined.

Best was quick to note, however, that though the inspection aspect of the investigation had started, it was not likely that their officers would catch employees red-handed.

“This will be a very difficult process. It’s not an easy exercise,” the ministry official admitted. “If officers go to this establishment, chances are they probably won’t see anything illegal being done. (BA)
