THERE WAS JUBILATION in the auditorium of the Graydon Sealy Secondary School last night as management consultant Kirk Humphrey was elected as the candidate to represent the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) in St Michael South in the next general election.
He won by a landslide, gaining 232 of the votes. His nearest rival was trade unionist Asokore Beckles, who gained 70 votes, and teacher Nathaniel Boyce, 47.
More than 500 people packed the school hall for what was described as a major showdown.
The nomination process began just after 5 p.m. and by 6:15, voting began. Just over an hour later, the four ballot boxes were back, with Humphrey dominating each one.
In brief remarks after his victory was announced, Humphrey called for the candidates to come together. He pledged his commitment to working with Beckles and Boyce to return the BLP to power and for the betterment of Barbados.
He said the fight to oust Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, the current constituency representative, and the Democratic Labour Party Government could only happen by placing people over politics. (SDB Media)
