OUTSIDE THE PULPIT: Keep children busy with summer jobs

There is a wicked spirit watching round you still, And he tries to tempt you, o all harm and ill. But you must not hear him, Though it’s hard for you, To resist the evil, And the good to do.  (Hymn 569: verses 4-5 – AM)

IT IS ALMOST UNBELIEVABLE that the summer holidays are here for our schoolchildren. Yes, it is here for real. The students got holidays yesterday (Thursday) while our teachers will be going on holiday today.

But it will not be holiday time for some teachers as yet, because for the next two days, they will be involved in marking the Caribbean Examinations Council Examination (CXC) papers.

I am sure that this time of the year will provide much headache for parents and guardians with what to do with their children? Everybody cannot afford to send their children or ward to summer camps or overseas to holiday with relatives.

It will be a real complex and compound situation for many because the extended family is not there, this is so because grandmothers, grandfathers, aunts, uncles are all involved in some form of employment.

Parents and guardians you have to find something worthwhile for the children to do during this long period because the devil will find work for idlehands to do.

My advice to you parents and guardians is to find a summer job for them to do at this time. Please keep them off the blocks! Some of you will ask, from where? When so many persons are being laid off. But what about asking that electrician, auto mechanic, plumber, carpenter or mason to take your son along with them. Please do not worry about the pay, that will come in due time. You mothers, what about asking the dressmakers, cosmetologist, and hairdressers to take your daughter and teach her the skill. In the end, those men and women must have a desire to learn!

Let this be an accident-free summer, please do not let your children go to the beach unsupervised and do not put your cars in the hands of your teenage son’s or daughter’s hands without being supervised.
