As residents slept in the early hours of yesterday morning, two gunshots rang out, piercing the silence in Melrose, St Thomas.
In the aftermath, policeman Shane Newton, 35, of Foul Bay, St Philip, had to be rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital after been shot by an unknown assailant.
The injured officer, a 15-year veteran attached to the Criminal Investigation Department, was reportedly shot in his shoulder after responding to a report just after midnight.
Police public relations officer, Acting Assistant Superintendent David Welch told the SUNDAY SUN that the officer underwent surgery for a broken collarbone and was said to be resting comfortably at the hospital in serious, but stable condition.
Welch said while no one had been arrested in connection with the incident, investigations were continuing and were at a delicate stage.
