Anthem Anxiety

A NEW VERSION of the Barbados National Anthem has left some unsure about how they should respond to it.

The issue came to the forefront on Monday night at the start of the Barbados Tridents versus Jamaica Tallawahs Caribbean Premier League T20 cricket match at Kensington Oval where the rearranged National Anthem was played and thousands of fans initially hesitated before eventually standing at attention.

Some fans complained there was no announcement the anthem was about to be played and they were caught by surprise. Others said they were unfamiliar with the new Nicholas Brancker arrangement which did not carry the traditional drum roll at the start.

To make matters worse, South African and Tridents bowler Wayne Parnell continued his bowling practice with a teammate, while the crowd and members of the two teams were standing at attention. (GE)
