Long wait for learner drivers

JITTERY STUDENT DRIVERS and their instructors hit a six-hour traffic jam yesterday when they showed up for tests at the Barbados Licensing Authority.

Driving hopefuls turned up from as early as 6 a.m. only to be faced with just examiners for the scores of tests for driving licences. 

After hours in the sweltering morning sun and some on empty stomachs, too nervous to eat, a number of the frustrated students declared the situation akin to madness.

Veteran driving instructor Erskine Cumberbatch said it was time that the authority hired more examiners.

“That’s the big problem. Testing officers gone home, [there] haven’t been replacements. We hope that they do something about it. I was here at five minutes to six o’ clock, ‘til about ten minutes to two,” he said.
