Centenarian shares lighter side of life

FROM THE GET-GO centenarian Myrtle Eumilda Lucas had Governor General Sir Elliot Belgrave in stitches.

The resident of Wilkinson Road, Richmond, St Michael, who celebrated her milestone at a relative’s house in Lower Estate Heights, St Michael, earlier today, could easily be described as a woman with wit.

At one point Sir Elliot read the card on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II, telling Myrtle it was something to put under her pillow.

“For me to dream up things now?” she said.

Though some of her jokes were not always child-friendly, Lucas, who was a cook, said she loves the Lord and raised her four children with a fear of God.

She has five grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren and told Sir Elliot it was time for him to get more children.

Michael, who was close to his grandmother growing up, said they did not have a lot, however they never went hungry.

“She would walk over to Wibisco though she could not afford the biscuits she would pick out the broken bits for us to eat,” he said.

Other relatives from New York and some friends from local neighbourhoods came to celebrate with Lucas on the special day. (MR)
