ALTHOUGH REPORTS of dog-snatching in Barbados are not rampant, there is concern about the number of dogs that go missing, especially those of rare breeds.

An official from the Animal Control Unit told the DAILY NATION that dogs had become profitable, even making money for some people.

“Dogs are a source of income for some people, and, of course, you can get money by sale of puppies. There’s this fad now where certain puppies can go for $600 depending on the breed. There have been reports of ‘dognapping’ or dog theft,” the representative said.

“We have had some reports of Ridgebacks, Rottweilers, Mixed German Shepherds being stolen,” he said, while listing those affected as the most popular and most expensive breeds. (JJS)
