TOMORROW BARBADOS’ ONLY living National Hero, Sir Garfield Sobers, becomes an octogenarian and we look forward to celebrating this significant milestone with him. After all, he has done so much for his homeland, and indeed the wider Caribbean, through his legendary exploits on the cricket field.

More than 40 years after Sir Garry’s career ended, his achievements as a unique and special player are still held in very high esteem, whether in the Caribbean, England, India or Australia. It was the pursuit and achievement of excellence that distinguished him then and which remains his legacy.

Therein lies the lesson which Sir Garry has taught Barbadians; the pursuit of excellence daily and in every field of endeavour.

He showed that by being world-class commands respect by those who admire skill, commitment and dedication. So all those who played cricket worldwide or simply sought to be at the top of their game in whatever area understood what he represented and stood for. Only the best was good enough.

His origins did not restrict him, while his outlook and desire propelled him. His achievements are enduring and have withstood the test of time. So even though others have surpassed some of his feats on the field of play, either by recording higher scores, or taking more wickets, his elegance with bat and ball and in the field places him in a category of his own.

Sir Garry’s achievements have certainly been enduring and that is why he is held up as a role model and his success is so celebrated. He is one of the most cherished of Barbados’ national heroes, since he cuts across the narrow confines of politics, the labour movement or religion. His appeal goes well beyond our borders.

Sir Garry has given a life lesson in why it is important to be consistent in delivering excellent service and not let the wretched events of the past impede future possibilities.

More Barbadians need to try to walk in Sir Garry’s footsteps. The passion and assurance he inspired, the self-confidence he displayed, the virtue of patience in his approach, and the grit of determination are qualities we need across this country today in every sphere of activity.

We must show that dedication to achieve those lofty goals regardless of the challenging obstacles if we are to make this country the pride of the entire Caribbean. We only need Sir Garry’s approach as our pathway. It is possible before the 100th anniversary of Independence.

Congratulations Sir Garry on reaching this stage in a life well lived. From the entire nation, a happy birthday to you.
