NO MATTER THE age, style and class never truly get old.
Last Sunday evening, a few hundred antique car enthusiasts gathered at Content, St Thomas and lapped up the rarest or best maintained of the island’s antique/retro vehicles at the Classic Car Revival Show.
Armed with their cameras, the patrons had a field day as they admired, sat in and engaged in debates surrounding the dozens of well-kept vehicles on display.
Whether it was the pastel mint green vintage 1954 Austin A40 Somerset Saloon or the two-toned cream and aubergine (dark purple) 1937 Ford Coupe, or even a retro 1970s Ford Escort, there was something for everyone.
Local Hyundai sales manager Philip Bynoe explained that the event was held two to three times each year in association with the Classic Car Association.
He noted that they had antique cars from the 1920s right up to retro vehicles from the 1980s and 1990s.
“We have cars that some of the older folks might actually recognise or went to school in or saw when they were going to school,” Bynoe said.
“But most cars you’ve never seen in your life. Beautiful, beautiful cars, well looked after and very rare.”
Bynoe said the event was growing each time it was held, with this iteration being the biggest they held so far.
“A lot of people are coming out and as time goes on, the word is spreading. So people that came last time would tell people come and go,” he said.
A1 Supermarkets founder Andrew Bynoe was on hand to hold a special auction for his authentic 1937 Ford Coupe.
The 79-year-old vehicle was in top-class condition, and fetched $50 000 from a foreign purchaser who was acting through a local broker. (AD)
