FROM THE music to the lights and costumes, the Games of the 31st Olympiad, in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, officially started last night with a spectacular opening ceremony that featured the parade of 206 nations and one refugee team at the Maracana Stadium.

Tiny Barbados with a contingent of 11 competitors and nine officials entered the stadium to rousing applause, with sprinter Ramon Gittens carrying the flag.

Main medal hope Akela Jones, who will compete in the heptathlon and high jump, is third from left. (MK)
