THE PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL has spent almost BDS$800 000 in repairs and it is just the beginning, said director David Leacock.
During an eye-opening tour, Leacock and other top officials at the 125-year-old hospital gave the WEEKEND NATION a look at the new $220 000 Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Unit, the $250 000 acute male admissions ward and the $275 000 nursing (staff) and doctors lounges.
The team also toured the hospital gym, which Leacock said was open to the public, and saw the summer camp there for children of staff. It was barricaded from the patients and kept under close supervision.
“Last year issues were raised in the media, some from staff and others from unknown sources, resulting in areas of the hospital being shown in print and online which painted the hospital in less than favourable circumstances,” Leacock said.
