Barbados’ track and field darling is within striking distance of an Olympic medal.
With four events completed in the heptathlon, Akela Jones sits in third position after an impressive first-day showing at the Rio Olympics in Brazil.
With only the long jump, javelin and 800 metres remaining, if Jones can maintain or improve her position, she will become the first Barbadian female to win an Olympic medal.
The 21-year-old managed to stay in medal contention despite finishing last in her heat in the day’s final event, the 200 metres. (RB)
