Akela heartened by support

AKELA JONES says she is overwhelmed by the huge outpouring of support she received in her quest to win an Olympic medal.

The darling of local track and field put in a gutsy performance to finish 20th in the women’s heptathlon at the 31st Olympiad in Rio on Saturday night.

After Friday’s first day of competition, Jones was in medal contention, moving up to third place but fell down the pack in the last two events.

“The support has been overwhelming. Never has a country come together for not only one athlete but the entire Barbados team,” she said yesterday. (HG)
