FAMILY AND FRIENDS yesterday paid their final respects to retired newspaperman Ulric St Elmo Rice during a service of thanksgiving at Glad Tidings Gospel Hall in Fitts Village,
St James.
Rice was a man with outstanding qualities who was dedicated to and understood his calling as a sub-editor and eventually Sunday Editor at the Advocate newspaper during its halcyon days. But he also had his frailties, which were highlighted by a period when he “hit the bottle”.
His nephew Samuel Rice, in a tribute, was forthright and frank, picking out not only the glorious achievements but reflecting also on the challenges.
One such challenge which Ulric was able to overcome, and in the process help others with their battle, was alcoholism. That episode caused him to lead the establishment of the local chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous. This month would have marked 51 years of sobriety for him. Over those years he reached out to help others with the same problem. (ES)
