Appointments ‘long overdue’

THE APPOINTMENT of temporary workers is long overdue.

This is the position of former National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) general secretary Dennis Clarke in response to Government’s decision to appoint all temporary public officers who have been in their posts for more than three consecutive years.

Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler revealed the plan on Tuesday during the 2016 Financial Statement and Budgetary Proposals. Clarke said the issue had been a major “struggle” for the union.

“This whole question of appointment goes back to 2008 when the Government of Barbados was supposed to appoint 3 500 workers; that is why you have the Public Service Act. When it came into being, those public servants that had done three years prior to December 2007 should have been automatically appointed,” he said.
