SOME 40 CAMPERS attending Camp Transition have been given tips on making the passage to secondary school more easily.
The camp opened at The St Michael School on Monday aimed at developing the social and interpersonal skills of the children, and for parents to understand their role during the transition period.
“The parents who do bring their children, they see the value, but I find sometimes in speaking to others they do not see the value in the camp. They assume the child is just moving to secondary school and will be fine,” said camp director Shauntée Walker.
Walker, a trained guidance counsellor assigned to Grantley Adams Memorial Secondary School for 15 years, explained: “We have found that many times the first-year students are not settled. They have no idea how to study, how to grapple with the increased workload. Some of them feign illness to be in the sick bay or they are constantly in our office. After we investigate, we realise that they are just not settling into school because they have not transitioned to the secondary school system.”(LK)
