THE OFFICE of Prime Minister Freundel Stuart is being drawn into a court case that is delaying the construction of a multipurpose industrial estate to be built on the site of the former Andrews Sugar Factory.
In the latest twist to a civil court case that has already halted work on the project, attorneys representing Government have made an application to the High Court asking that the Chief Town Planner and the Attorney General be removed as respondents, and be replaced by Stuart, the minister responsible for planning and development.
High Court judge Pamela Beckles recently renewed an injunction to prevent any construction at the site. She ordered that no new work be started at the place where the multipurpose sugar cane project is to be built. The injunction, which runs indefinitely until discharged by the court, prohibits any work at Andrews “save and except for permitted demolition” of the decades old factory.
It means that work to transform the sugar cane industry to provide a number of by-products won’t be starting any time soon. (BA)
